EUROPE DIRECT - Free resources for schools

Fiona HarrisFiona Harris is coordinating the Europe Direct Relay in Newtown, Powys. The office is one of six across Wales and 700 across Europe, which provide advice and information to the 450 million people across the 27 EU Member States. Europe Direct aims to offer general information about EU matters in any of the official EU languages, answer questions on any European Union policy and provide practical information on dozens of subjects.

Europe Direct is particularly keen to engage with children of all ages. There is a number of FREE publications available for schools which can be ordered via Fiona. Take a look at www.ec.europa.eu for information about the EU. The Easy Reading Corner shows some of the items available. The information is linked to many topics including food, environment, climate change, culture, geography. Please give Fiona a call on 01686 611050 or email fharris@wcva.org.uk to discuss further.

Community Focused Schools

The Welsh Assembly Government defines a Community Focused School as one that provides a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of its pupils, their families and the wider community. Therefore the Community Focused Schools Team have recently expanded to include two CFS Co-ordinators for North and South Powys.

Over 20 CFS projects have been funded from 2005 until end of March 2008. The CFS Team are working closely with the CAFE team to provide a range of Out of School Hours and extra-curricula activities for school pupils and their families which include:
· Wrap around care · Breakfast clubs
· After School Clubs · Pre School activities
· Sports Clubs · Holiday Clubs
· ICT Courses and activities · Environmental projects

One of the key aims of the CAFE Project is to build a resource bank for schools that is available to all. There is a lot of excellent material on the web or available, often free of charge, in hard copy including CD ROM and photocopyable worksheets.

As teachers may not have the time to search for these the project has been able to assist. Currently the single best and most up-to-date resource available is downloadable from the British Food Fortnight website as follows:

BRITISH FOOD FORTNIGHT - HOW TO TAKE PART

To download a copy of the 2005 edition of 'Putting the 'Ooo' back into food - A Resource Pack for Schools' click here. This is an excellent A4 compendium of ideas and information sources.

To download a copy of the 2005 edition of 'Britain's Regional Food & Drink - Advice for Retailers & Caterers', includes information for restaurants, pubs and shops on how to take part in British Food Fortnight click here.

For a downloadable poster to display in your shop, pub restaurant or school click here.

If you would like a hard copy of these materials, please email info@britishfoodfortnight.co.uk

The National Association of Field Studies Officers (NAFSO)

This is the only organisation in the UK which represents professionals employed in teaching, developing and promoting field studies. It is a Voluntary Association which aims to disseminate good practice amongst its members and works to ensure that their interests are represented nationally.

NAFSO has members based at centres throughout the UK, including those run by local authorities as well as independent and charitable organisations.

The Association produces a variety of publications and organises training events throughout the year, including a major three day conference in January.

During recent years NAFSO has worked in partnership with other organisations including local education authorities, National Grid, Environment Agency, English Nature, The Countryside Agency and Growing Schools.

FACE in Wales

FACE, or Farming and Countryside Education, is a charity with over 50 member organisations all of whom have a commitment to educational work associated with food, farming and the countryside. Jane will be working with the CAFE Project and other partners in Wales to get the message out about farm education, at all levels from schools to the Assembly.

The CAFE Project is featured in the latest FACE newsletter. Click here

Oxfam Teachers Pack

The charity Oxfam has published a pack for teachers 'Our Food, Our World: a Let's eat photopack for ages 5 to 9'

http://publications.oxfam.org.uk/oxfam/display.asp?K=9781870727778

Teacher review:

Children like learning from other children. In this excellent pack, the teachers are AA in Thailand, Jordan in France, Thembe in South Africa, Luis in Mexico and Yamini in India. They’re all aged between six and eight, and we see them engaged in many activities to do with growing, buying, preparing and enjoying food.

The clear A4 photographs are on sturdy card. AA shops in the supermarket and at a vegetable stall with her grandmother; Jordan helps out in the family bar and goes foraging for mushrooms; Thembe climbs a tree in search of fruit; Luis sits down to a family meal; Yamini chops a carrot and goes for a picnic. We soon notice that the activities are all "different but the same". This careful choice of varied images to illustrate common necessities is an ideal way of provoking exploration and discussion in the classroom.

The generous booklet for teachers suggests a wealth of ideas: thinking about where food comes from and what contributes to its cost, debating the merits of spicy vs. plain, making an inventory of who cooks at home. A colourful poster and a CD-Rom which offers all the photographs for IWB and PC, with extra attractions like the food journey of a banana, complete a very useful resource.
